2005-2006
Growing
through Transition
Year 2005-2006 for Bridge of Hope BuxMont, which ended March 31, can
best be described as a year of “growing through transition.” As we
prepared for the departure of our founding Board President, Anne Kaufman
Weaver, the board of directors engaged in a multi-level strategic
planning process to discern what God might have planned for the future
of this ministry.
This process of discernment resulted in a three-year plan for April
2006-March 2009. This plan lays out two overarching goals:
· To double program capacity to serve up to twenty families per year in
order to better meet the need that exists.
· To continue to improve program effectiveness to ensure that graduating
participants can sustain long-term housing for themselves and their
children.
Several events of this past year confirm this direction for Bridge of
Hope BuxMont:
Scholarship Fund: A gift of $50,000 was provided as seed money for an
endowment fund to support educational efforts of program participants
needing to increase their earning potential.
Founder’s Fund: A second gift of $50,000 was provided to establish a
Founder’s Fund in honor of Anne Kaufman Weaver in order to provide a
foundation for ensuring longevity for the mission of Bridge of Hope
BuxMont.
Referral Relationships: An intentional referral relationship was
established with a local domestic violence shelter to better prepare
applicants to Bridge of Hope BuxMont.
Landlords of Mercy: Several local landlords provided rental housing to
Bridge of Hope BuxMont participants below market rates.
Thank you for “transitioning” with us this past year. Please celebrate
with us the Program Highlights noted in this Annual Report. We invite
you to discover with us what God has in store for the future!

The Importance of Being an Equal
Friend
When *Theresa was asked to go to a mentor’s house for Easter dinner, she
was excited but very anxious. It took a great deal of courage to attend
the family dinner of her mentor. She was unsure if the mentor would
refer to her as the “Bridge of Hope lady”, causing her to feel like a
charity case. Theresa asked the Bridge of Hope BuxMont staff person to
tell the mentor how fearful she was about this possibility.
Theresa did attend the family Easter dinner and was delighted to learn
how important that it was that she was not identified with Bridge of
Hope BuxMont. She shared with me that no one knew she was anything other
than a friend of her mentor. As she and her mentor sat at the dinner
table chatting and laughing, Theresa felt that she really was an equal
friend. It was very significant that she was invited to the table with
the other family members. Even the fact that she was asked to bring the
rolls for the dinner affirmed her in her contribution and that her part
was needed.
Much is to be learned from this simple story of going to an Easter
dinner! God created each person with a need for significance and
purpose. Mentoring groups from local churches are matched with
participants to provide friendship and support. The building of mutual
respect and equal friendship is the key in the mentoring relationships.
An Easter dinner shared with family and friends provides an opportunity
to value and celebrate what we have to offer each other in God’s love.
