Volunteer Mentoring Group Description

You can make a difference! Invite a homeless single mother and her children into your heart, into your congregation and into God’s love.  You may be serving Christ in disguise!

Purpose:

A mentoring group is comprised of 10-12 people from one congregation to serve as a hospitality team whose primary task will be to offer practical assistance and encouragement.

Location:

Activities may occur in private or public settings within the community.  Formal meetings occur at the sponsoring church.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing encouragement and affirmation.
  • Assisting with practical needs as a participating family moves into their new home
  • Providing on-going encouragement through prayer, monthly correspondence and weekly meals
  • Exemplifying and receiving Christ’s love in providing unconditional support for the participating family
  • Refraining from providing money directly to the participating family or otherwise fostering an unhealthy, co-dependent relationship

Roles:

  • Moving chair–facilitates communication among group members, plans logistics of move and serves as a liaison to staff (1)
  • Movers–help move furniture, provide childcare (if needed), gather donations (all)
  • Meal providers–provide one meal per month for the family for 12 months (all)
  • Prayer partners–make a commitment to pray for the participant and group members; coordinate weekly emails for prayer requests for participant and group members (2)
  • Pen pals–make a commitment to send two letters of encouragement a month to the participating family (2)
  • Social Coordinators–commit to planning monthly group gatherings, birthday and holiday parties for the family as needed (2)

Length of Service:

The commitment to Bridge of Hope BuxMont’s participant is 12 months. There is the opportunity for your relationship to grow beyond the 12 month time commitment.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 19 years of age or older
  • Satisfactory criminal background and child abuse registry checks
  • Ability to provide practical support and encouragement to a single parent and children in the Bridge of Hope BuxMont program
  • Willingness to learn from the participant
  • Patience and persistence through the inevitable “ups and downs” of mentoring
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to meet the Commitments of the program
  • Commitment to the Bridge of Hope BuxMont Mission Statement:

Ending homelessness for single-parent families in Montgomery and Bucks Counties by connecting them to professional case management and trained mentoring groups from Christian churches in order that the families achieve permanent housing, financial self-sufficiency, and family stability.

Support Provided:

  • Two evening training sessions and one orientation meeting
  • Periodic Resource Nights will be available as an opportunity for mentors to receive necessary support and education  on topics of relevance 
  • Three check-in and de-briefing meetings with staff
  • Phone and e-mail consultation as needed with staff

  • The opportunity to provide an informal support network for a family who may not have access to such support otherwise.
  • The opportunity for spiritual growth as one’s faith beliefs are challenged by the realities of relating to someone who may have a very different background and socioeconomic status from one’s own.
  • The opportunity to carry out God’s mandate to care for those facing poverty and homelessness in our communities by providing practical support and encouragement
  • The opportunity to learn about the challenges low income single parent families face as they journey toward financial stability

Referral Guidelines

Appropriate referrals for Bridge of Hope BuxMont are single-parent families who are presently homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

Intake & Referral Procedure

Bridge of Hope BuxMont is not emergency housing.  The application process is usually five to seven weeks in length and is dependent upon family suitability for the program and the availability of mentoring groups.
